Luxus Brut breathes the spirit of 1950s hand-lettered signage. With a flowing grace rarely seen in formal retro scripts, it pairs a connecting lowercase with large, distinctive caps that descend below the baseline. To maintain the graceful connections, the font holds three sets of capital characters and four sets of lowercase characters, managed by a powerful Contextual Alternates OT feature.

The inspiration for this font came from the signage of an old Viennese bookbindery in the 9th district, where I lived at the time. When I first discovered this gem in 2001, I immediately had the idea of preserving it in the form of a font. The sign existed until 2024, when it fell victim to a façade renovation. The typeface has since found a large number of dazzling new applications, especially on facades (again!), product packaging, books and magazines.
